Shane Hardy is a partner and Chair of the firm’s Business Law practice group. Shane’s extensive trademark practice has seen him act as counsel to a wide range of Canadian and international intellectual property (“IP”) rights holders and has allowed him to assist in the acquisition, licensing, protection and enforcement of some of the world's most famous trademarks. A Registered Trademark Agent, Shane is recognized as a leading lawyer by the World Trademark Review (WTR1000): The World's Leading Trademark Professionals for his work in prosecution, contentious and transactional matters. Shane is an active leader within the Canadian IP Community. He has been a member of the International Trademark Association (“INTA”) Enforcement Committee and is the incoming Chair of INTA’s Famous and Well Known Marks Canadian Subcommittee. Shane’s leading involvement in sound marks resulted in him being invited to present to the Association of Corporate Counsel’s 2013 Annual Meeting where he chaired a panel of experts from the United States and Europe on non-traditional trademark issues.
Shane is also active in Canada’s legal education community and, for several years, coached the Osgoode Hall Law School team in Canada’s Fox Moot (Canada’s national intellectual property moot). In 2013 he presented at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law at a session entitled ‘Protecting Roots,’ designed to chronicle protection strategies for one of Canada’s most famous brands. Shane also lectures, along with members of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office’s Opposition Board, on trademark matters at Osgoode Hall Law School.
